I created it with simple pencil and a bit of ye olde Photoshop, because I am, and probably will always be, a 'Maya-tard'.
Medusa Clash of the Titans Date: 05/25/2010 These characters from Clash of the Titans were designed not for the movie, but for the computer game, which was to come out simultaneously with the film. Aaron Simms and his small army of anonymous worker-bees had yet to come up with any finished concepts, so I had to take stabs in the dark, loosely basing them on the creatures from the original film. I have no idea if these ended up in the game, or if they finally got concept art from the Art Department in time to implement them into their game.

I hear the movie was one of the greatest films ever made, but I have yet to see it. I have urgent things to do, like re-arrange my sock drawer.

Apocalyptic Vampire Date: 05/26/2010 A predatory, Vampire-thing created for a now-defunct(?) project.
Black Terminator Design-01 Date: 05/17/2009 I worked on T4 Salvation early on the project, while the script was in a state of flux. Unfortunately I had to leave the project to finish a commitment illustrating a book, and was unable to stay on for much of the final design work. However, often the earliest stage of a script is where the most fun is to be had!

This design was for a singular Terminator robot we referred to as the 'Black Terminator' or the 'Assassin'. He was to be a special robot dispatched to hunt down our hero relentlessly, much like the Terminators of the previous films. He was to be very tall, made of anodized, black-chromed, titanium, and to be outfitted with special weaponry. He was to be unique in some way, yet similar to the T-600. Here, in this drawing, I have borrowed elements from one my my favorite yet underrated robotic, movie villain designs, to try to give him a more interesting and menacing silhouette. Though I painted this in Photoshop, I don't think the director had much of a response to it. It seems that the only thing that gets a rise out of modern directors (and everyone else for that matter) is design by image-collaging, which gives the art a more 'photo-realistic' look. Ultimately, this is how most everything for the film, including the costumes, were designed.
Black Terminator Design-02 Date: 05/17/2009 Here is an early attempt to make a piece of art that featured the Terminator Assassin in an image that would personify the feeling of the film. The classic Terminator 'wall of flame' as a backdrop. I fitted him with two big, plasma rifles on his back that he would carry with him and pull down to use when in attack mode.
Black Terminator Design-03 Date: 05/17/2009 This is actually the first drawing I did of the big, black, Terminator. Very conservative in it's design, staying close to the original T-800. Thicker, taller, more heavily armored, and bearing his two big, plasma-rifles on his back like wings. A hellish, robotic, angel of death.

No "I was looking at the lights" with this one. Do you want him to tear down your fricking lights? Stay off his set.

You and him are done professionally.

Mother's Minge!
All Terrain Vehicle-01 Date: 05/17/2009 Here I jumped on the bandwagon of photo-collaging, as it was apparent that this was the way things were going. I try to draw back into my cloodged designs and make them my own as much as possible. This was a vehicle that played a big part in the early script. I don't know if anything like it survived into the film. It was to be a kind of small, fast, three person ATV with a turret, that was able to elude the Tank HKs in a dramatic chase through all kinds of insane obstacles. I like this one because it is composed of solid metal. Being that they were designed for use by endo-skeletons as patrol units, they would have little need for shock-absorption and other human comforts, though they would eventually of course, be stolen and used by the resistance. The wheels themselves have no tires to be deflated. A tight, little, indestructible, package.

Ooo-weeer.
ATV-03 Date: 05/17/2009 another of many attempts to work out the ATV. This one was more human friendly, smaller, more streamlined, and missing the gun turret. Also, it was deemed that the tires should have rubber on them for better traction.

Sullen youth in leather jacket sold separately.
Arial HK-01 Date: 05/17/2009 More Photoshop cloodging. It's all the rage baby!

Actually, 3D programs are all the rage. This is soooo 2003.

Here was my first attempt at a design that was cruder than the one in the first film, yet still deadly and interesting.
Ariel HK-03 Date: 05/17/2009 Another stab at the old flying HK. I was trying to give this one a kind of 'Mako shark' appeal. You know. Sharks are real mean, and they have lots of big teeth, and they bite people. Rwwwoaaaar!!

I kind of liked this design as it looked kind of more retro. I incorporated some of the nose-cone sensory apparatus used in our contemporary Apache attack helicopters. I liked their asymmetrical assemblies of weird shapes, and thought they would be a kind of transitional technology between the HKs of this film, and those of the later films.
Ariel HK-05 Date: 05/17/2009 I just drew this one out in pencil and did a flat, plane coloring of it in Photoshop. Nothing fancy. I kind of like the simple, almost anime' look that it has. I was going for a blockier, clumsier shape. Again, more Apache nose-cone stuff.
Ariel Hk-02 Date: 05/17/2009 This was a first stab at the design of the HK transport ship.
Ariel HK sketch Date: 05/17/2009 Just a quick, traditional drawing to work out a potential shape for a new HK.
SkyNet Tank-04 Date: 05/17/2009 I did lots of these. The tanks played a big part in early versions of the story. They had to be smaller and better able to clear low overhangs for various reasons.
SkyNet Tank-02-2 Date: 05/17/2009 There were all kinds of variations. Are there any tanks in the final film?
SkyNet Tank-05 Date: 05/17/2009 Another SkyNet Tank design. This one maintains a low profile by being able to lower it's gun turrets into the main body to be able to get into those hard to reach places where pesky humans hide!

Ridley came in with a picture of a dead and slightly rotted baby's head he had found somewhere, and that became the basis for the makeup eventually sculpted by Glen Hans.

The Dragon Hunter's Handbook Date: 07/25/2008 I finished my third and most likely final book for Barnes and Noble earlier this year. I think this is the best of the three. It has a wonderful story in it by gifted British writer Martin Howard, that chronicles the life of the first member of the Van Helsing family to ever do battle ancient evil way back in the dark ages. She is a beautiful, raven-haired warrior-woman with two swords and a serious rack, and she kicks the living shit out of Demonic, cosmic, Dragons. What the hell more do you want!?

It will become available only at Barnes and Noble, beginning in late September 2008. Or buy it online at barnesandnoble.com if it is still available. These books were run in small batches were meant only to sell for the year in which they were released.

Here, our heroin has slain her first dragon, tearing off much of her armor in the process realizing that what she really needs is agility, and not heavy protection when matching wits and weapons with a real dragon!
Dragon Hunter Date: 06/01/2008 This is a drawing from a book I illustrated with the very talented writer Martin Howard called 'The Dragon Hunter's Handbook'. The main character of the story I based on my wife, and here she is done up in her full Dragon Hunting regalia. I failed of creating an interesting and unique female warrior design here. Not that this is an easy task these days, as every possible inch of territory in this realm has been visually explored, especially by artists who design games. The Japanese and Korean artists are truly amazing in this area. Sadly, and for reasons that made little sense, I was very constricted by my editors in the design of this costume, and it shows.

At least I got away with giving her a little 'happy trail'.

Though I am kidding, I do kind of like this rendering. It has a quaint and slightly creepy quality that would fit into the Juxtapoz world quite nicely. Put a piece of meat on one side of it and an Abraham Lincoln head on the other, and you almost have a Mark Ryden painting.

Puss n' Boots Date: 06/23/2008 One of my first attempts to paint in Photoshop. Not too bad for an early try. But then again, I didn't have to put him in an environment.

Can you guess the name of this children's book character?
If you can't, you may just be a retard.
RockMan Date: 08/05/2008 This was the first attempt at a design for the rock monster that attacks our Captain on the planet surface in Galaxy Quest. I even took a stab at designing the little blue men.

Deep Sea Thing! Date: 08/05/2008 I did this strange piece an eternity ago. This is a creature that was essentially designed by the mighty Jordu Schell for the maniacal Steve Johnson on some now forgotten project that may or may not have ever happened. I took Jordu's pencil sketches and turned them into a finished, color presentaion rendering.

This monster is really 3 monsters in one, as the two creatures attached to either side come off and are their own separate entities. Yes, this deep sea abomination was a triple-threat to divers everywhere.

Necromonger-Infantry undersuit Date: 08/04/2008 This was a design suggestion for the Necromonger soldiers. It was to be an undersuit upon which various armored pieces could be attached. It was rejected by the costume designer who saw it as a threat (God knows why) but something just like it was adopted after I left the costume department.

Gotta love ego.

Flora Plum Date: 08/05/2008 Why the silly name for an illustration of Russell Crowe all covered in fur like Chewbacca? I'll tell you. It's because if you stuck your thumb in Russell's rather floral bum...you'd pull out a plum.

No.

Truth is I did this drawing for Greg Cannom several years ago when Jodie Foster was going to direct and star in a period film called 'Flora Plum' about a female high-wire acrobat who falls in love with the dog faced man in a Travelling Circus. I believe the film didn't get made because Russell Crowe broke his rib. Hail Maximus!

NOCTURNA Date: 08/05/2008 There is a very long and beautiful Pygmalian story about this piece of art that I will write more about when I have the time.

It brought me my wonderful wife.
JORUNE Date: 08/05/2008 This is the original cover for the boxed edition of Jorune circa 1985. The oil painting I did for this cover was never finished, and was torn from under my brush and brought to be photographed for the color separations with the paint still wet. There are raw and unfinished areas all over this piece where the underpainting shows through.

Ah, to be 22 again....
JORUNE - Beauty and the Beast Date: 08/05/2008
Burdoth Date: 08/04/2008 Burdoth is a city on Jorune. It is also an expansion pack for the role playing game, and this was it's cover. My beautiful Persian girlfriend Fahimeh Jabbari posed for this cover all those years ago.......
A Trarch Date: 08/05/2008 A Trarch is the Jorune equivalent of an ogre or a troll. To find out what the hell Jorune is, Wikipedia it.
Ramian Pirates Date: 08/05/2008 Even Jorune has pirates. And these pirates are Ramian. Whoa, you know what THAT means!
Ramian Rampage Date: 08/05/2008 Jorune is a strange place. When Ramian enter their 'chiveer' mode, they go all whacky and start charging through the black bogs of Voligire, and, well, you know.

Trouble.
Club Trarch Date: 08/05/2008 No, it's not a resort on the Mexican Riviera. This is a Trarch, on Jorune, with a big nasty club. Nothing relaxing about this. You won't find this ornery bastard in a Corona Lite commercial. Though, that would be damned interesting.
Salrough Gomo Date: 08/05/2008 Salrough Gomo the Thriddle becons you into his little Jorune cottage.

Be cautious!

Once inside, you may be seduced into doing free drawings for a role-playing game that will go nowhere and pay nothing.
Stroke of Midnight Date: 08/05/2008 I did this elaborate piece for a friend's rubber mask company back in 1984. I used to be a madman with a pencil. That was before computers. I still love pencil though. The name 'Stroke of Midnight' took on a whole new meaning when the afore mentioned friend had to stay at my apartment for a few days in the fall of 1986, and my girlfriend woke up late at night to find him 'stroking it' on the floor in his sleeping bag.

It might also be mentioned that Rob Bottin got a little miffed when I showed him this piece. He felt that I was ripping off the design for 'Darkness' that we had just developed that summer for LEGEND. I hastened to enlighten him to the fact that I was merely doing my own take on Cernabog, the Demon from Disney's Night on Bald Mountain section in Fantasia. 'Darkness' had sprung from this same source. He really couldn't say much at that point.
Woffen Date: 08/05/2008 Not the Waffen SS my friends. No, these are wolfmen from planet Jorune. They know nothing of national Socialism. But they know how to drink, and laugh, and scratch fleas, and lift their legs to piss on things.

Maudra Date: 08/04/2008
The Temple Date: 08/04/2008 A fine are piece of my own done in acrylic and oils.
T-Rex Date: 08/04/2008 I did this rather stylized T-Rex for the label of a T-Shirt company I was trying to start up back in the 80's. I just didn't have the business acumen to get this kind of thing off the ground. I am an artist for Christ's sake.
Life Drawing Date: 08/05/2008 A simple 20 minute life drawing from an old sketchbook.
The Elements Date: 07/07/2009 These silly creatures are meant to represent the elements, and how they work their primal magic on the Earth to slowly move fossils to the surface. I did this back in the 80's for a now forgotten Dinosaur magazine. I probably got paid about 5 bucks.
HanSolo 1978 Date: 05/26/2010 I recently discovered this old friend in a moldering pile of ancient artwork. A ball point pen rendering I did back in 8th grade of Han Solo. Ah, the good old days.
I learned to draw and render by trying to copy photos without tracing them. Someone told me when I was quite young that drawing in ball point pen was more difficult because you couldn't erase as you went along, so I adopted it as a tool to try and grow faster. I loved to cross hatch. I learned that from Basil Wolverton.
STAR TREK -First Oil -1975 Date: 08/03/2008 I include this one to remind myself and anyone else who cares what a nerd I am.

This was my first oil painting, done around 1975. I did it using only oils paints straight from the tube, and turpentine. I knew nothing about painting mediums, or anything about technique. All I knew is that people were telling me that Oils were the only true medium for the REAL artist, so I had better start using them.

Of course Star Trek could be the only subject matter for me at the time. Star Wars had yet to come out!

What a dweeb.
